P21Fest has wrapped, and it was another awesome year! Thanks so much to all who were in attendance! So many of our friends, members, in-kind sponsors, and supporters came out in droves from all over the world! We were, as always, humbled and thrilled by the crowds. For those who weren’t, we’ll fill you in on all the awesome stuff you missed so you know what to expect next year! (You can also download the program HERE by right-clicking and selecting “Save As”.)

2009 P21FEST WRAPUP

This year was our largest Festival to date. Project Twenty1 screened over 50 films this year, held 10 workshops, and 4 parties, in a 4-day run from October 1st-4th, based in the International House Philadelphia, and this including party venues all around University City: Marbar, Distrito, 12 Lounge, and The Ellen Powell Tiberino Museum. We could not have done it without the help and support of all of these venues, especially International House, who has been a proud supporter and fiscal sponsor of P21 since 2008, which makes donations to Project Twenty1 tax-deductible under their 501(c)3 umbrella.

Our winner of Best Marketing, Team Justice Productions, did an awesome series of podcasts documenting their 21-Day Filmmaking process, as well as the Festival itself. So if you missed any of it, be sure to check them out right here! Or, at youtube.com/jprodlcc

UPCOMING SCREENINGS & PROMOS

Although P21Fest is wrapped, our work is just beginning. We’ll be supporting our community of filmmakers, both from the Philadelphia Filmathon and the 21-Day Filmmaking Competition, by submitting the films in our library, on your behalf, to our partner festivals around the country, in an attempt to earn our artists as much exposure as possible.

For starters, just this past weekend, our 2008 winner Leon & The Wolf, screened to a packed theater as a part of the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival, October 11th as a part of their shorts showcase “Dark”. PAAFF put on a great festival this year, and we look forward to working with them more closely in years to come.

Also, Project Twenty1 is co-sponsoring two screenings this year at FirstGlance Film Festivals in Philadelphia, PA, on Friday, October 23.  First up at 7:45 pm, we are hosting the Filmathon film, “Chasing the White Dragon”, directed by Kathilynn Phillips, which is surrounded by some amazing shorts (tickets). And if you missed the winner of our 21-Day Filmmaking Competition, be sure to stay to check out the 10:45 screening of “Ghost Light,” by Team Emerald Productions, to be followed by the feature “Ice Grill USA(tickets).

Our Award-winning films (and select other festival favorites) will be sent to dozens of other festivals in the coming months, so stay tuned for more information!

2010 and BEYOND

As you may or may not realize, 100% of Project Twenty1’s staff and executives are volunteers. As we move into 2010, we hope to be able to add to our community and support more artists through our network and festival, but we are at maximum capacity right now with the artists we do have, and our organization is growing too quickly for us to be able to run it on a purely volunteer basis. In 2009 alone, in addition to our existing programming, we have added 2 new screening series, networking events, educational workshops, artistic parties, and an internship program. The bottom line: WE NEED SUPPORT to keep providing the same level of quality programming and artist support that we’ve been offering to date.

The good news is: every single one of you can help!! How, you ask?

HELP US FIND A TITLE SPONSOR: We have the mission, we have the programming, and we have an amazing network of artists and loads of community support in a city ripe with film, animation, arts, and business opportunities. We also have the ability to get a sponsor’s name, logo, and branding in front of a large audience. We simply haven’t had time to search for sponsors on the level necessary to support our burgeoning organization. Finding a corporate sponsor who loves what we do and wants to affiliate themselves with us would help alleviate the financial strain on us and our artists, and allow us to continue in 2010 and beyond.

So we’re asking you, our community: do you know anybody who works at a medium-sized to large company, looking to attract consumers, or looking to market their brand to trendy, artistic, technologically-savvy individuals? We have the audience, and we’d love to talk with them about how they can get involved. Please, put them in touch with us. Simply email us, and help make the introduction. Note that we are not begging for free “handouts”. We will work for our sponsors, and we will provide to them the audience they need. We just need help getting our foot in the door. Anything you, our community, can do to help, would be immensely appreciated. Again, we may not be able to hold this kind of festival again without you!

CONTRIBUTE OR BECOME A MEMBER: Project Twenty1 runs year-round events, and partners with countless organizations, in and around the Greater Philadelphia region. BECOME A MEMBER on our website, and receive discounts and coupons off many Project Twenty1 events, and partner events throughout the region. As a Member, you will also receive first knowledge of upcoming events, and coupon codes for use on our website. We also highly value our members’ input, so by joining us, you will be able to help us drive the decisions and future of our organization.

Not able to attend our events but want to contribute anyway? MAKE A DONATION! All donations over $25 result in a membership for yourself or an individual of your choosing as well.

Project Twenty1

Philly’s constantly expanding and contracting film fest market has had some growing pains. But the folks at Project Twenty1 have managed to pull off a constantly expanding repertoire for the fourth year running. Thursday kicks off four days of film screenings, workshops, events and parties with the Philadelphia premiere of the comedy You Might as Well Live, followed by a party at nearby Distrito. Visit the website for the full schedule, but be sure to check out the weekend slate of films made this past summer in the fest’s three-week (or, ahem, 21-day) window—in all, more than 50 flicks, including 30 world premieres. With a schedule this big, perhaps some of the city’s bigger film fests could learn a little something. Jeffrey Barg 7pm. $8. Behind the scenes of an indepedent film

September 23, 2009 by LaurenWainwright
(original source)

Justice Productions, an independent film company composed mostly of Rowan University graduates, recently won a film contest.

The contest, called “Project Twenty1,” challenges young, independent filmmakers to write, shoot and produce a film in 21 days. After they have completed the film, they have one month to get the word out and promote their piece before it has a premiere in Philadelphia. The film contest provides a unique opportunity for up-and-coming filmmakers.

“I really like Project Twenty1 because it is an amazing networking opportunity for filmmakers and the people who run it are very supportive and appreciative of independent filmmakers,” said Cyd Katz, the co-director and co-writer of the film “The Journal’s Paragon,” and an 2008 graduate of Temple University.

The film centers around two friends who go on a treasure hunt.

“The film is about two friends that find an old journal in the attic and it sends them on a quest for a treasure,” said Doug Seidel, co-director and star of the film, and an 2004 Rowan graduate.

Creating the film went beyond coming up with a sentence-long concept. The crew ran into their fair share of difficulties while making this film.

“One problem we have would be scheduling,” Seidel said. “It changes when we can shoot, where we can shoot, where we have access, who we know and even the script. It depends on who is available. We then discuss what we can make around those factors.”

Adam Goldberg, the sound engineer for the film, was a 2004 Rowan graduate. Goldberg echoed Seidel’s sentiments on the difficulties of making an independent film.

“The biggest problem is coordinating everyone’s schedule,” Goldberg said. “This is no one’s full time job. It’s difficult to get real actors to participate and act for free.”

Getting actors to act for free is difficult, but a necessity when working on an independent film. The dire financial situation on set foreshadows the many obstacles the crew has to face.

“The budget is $10,000, as opposed to millions,” said Michael Fromm, a co-writer and co-producer and a lead actor in the film. “Money is a huge factor. We need a place to film or proper equipment and a stable crew.

“Most of us have real world jobs. It’s hard to get together on a low budget movie.”

Fromm also felt that despite how hard their schedules were to sync up, having such a small group worked out for the best.

“The script is more personal to the writer and the director,” Fromm said. “We’re a small, close-knit group. Most of us went to Rowan and know each other well.”

Due to having such a small group, each member of the crew played an important part of the overall production. In larger cinematic companies, a newcomer will be placed in a position where they serve coffee or hold a microphone. When working in a smaller production, every opinion counts equally.

“You don’t get to direct or write the first time,” Seidel said. “You’re more so there holding a microphone, getting a bagel and coffee, doing paperwork, and so on. You start at the bottom. In indie films with others with your same background and school, you get to do what you want.

“Your friends help you out. If it’s someone’s first time directing, we all help them out.”

Goldberg works as a professional audio engineer at NJN. He saw the same difference in his two experiences.

“Even if someone does the technical side of the film, everyone gets asked their opinion,” Goldberg said. “Everyone gets to throw in their two cents. That’s the interesting side to doing an independent film.”

The crew did a little extra work and put together podcasts throughout the 21 day contest. The podcasts serve as a video catalog of what the crew did from the first day until the last day of the contest, and can be found on the film’s Web site, journalsparagon.com.

“The podcast was shot and edited every night to update everyone on our progress,”  Seidel said.

Fromm cited the cinema Workshop and the Rowan TV Network as vital experience in making “The Journal’s Paragon.” The two organizations are where most of the crew met and where they gained their background in the film industry.

“We were a part of both of those and if it weren’t for those two, we probably wouldn’t have all met and Justice Productions may not be a reality,” said Fromm.

“The Journal’s Paragon” will play at the International House in Philadelphia, as a featured film in the festival’s red screening. The festival takes place from Oct. 1 through Oct. 4, with “The Journal’s Paragon” playing Oct. 3 at 3 p.m.

Bruce plays a night janitor named Walter, Roberta is a ghost ballerina and Kimberly plays a ghostly opera singer. Ginna Higgins, Kumar Dari and Susan Dewey also are in featured roles. The entire film was shot on location at the historic Ritz Theatre-which is thought to be haunted.

“Ghost Light” was written and directed by local filmmakers Kent Green of Collingswood and Ernie Rockelman, who are co-owners of Emerald Productions. Kent is a Rowan University graduate with a BA in Radio/TV/Film. His first short film, PREY was nominated for best editing at the International Festival of Cinema and Technology and was the number one viewed horror film for several weeks on ifilm.com. Green’s most recent short film, “A Rose Has Teeth”, won first prize at the Glasstown Arts Film Festival.

Ernie Rockelman holds degrees from Rowan University and The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. He is a filmmaker who has acted as screenwriter, cinematographer, editor and director on an assortment of film and video projects. His works have received honors from such organizations as The Red Bank International Film Festival, Fangoria TV, The Eerie Horror Festival, The Terror Film Festival and The Glasstown Arts Festival. Most recently, his zombie short “Dead Tired” was nominated for best horror short and best musical score at The Terror Film Festival and his slasher homage, “Help Me,” won second prize in the horror category at The September Shorts Festival.

Project Twenty1’s flagship screenings conclude with the final 10 World Premiere shorts, all made in 21 days this summer, all involving this year’s element: “Key.” This screening features filmmakers from the tri-state area, as well as entries from Michigan, Arizona, and Hawaii. These films include gripping film noir, hilarious mockumentary, tense mafia films, creepy science fiction, comedy and family-friendly horror.

West Chester student competes in Philly film festival

chrispierdimenicoEvery spring, West Chester University Theater plans and carries out a 24-hour theater project.

Much like the title states, those involved have to plan, write, construct, design, rehearse, advertise and perform a one-act show in one 24-hour sprint.

A program like this calls for a tremendous amount of teamwork, focus and knowledge of the craft, along with attention to time and deadlines.

A similar, but global project is the Project Twenty1 21-Day Filmmaking Competition, sponsored by the International House of Philadelphia. Again, thanks to the self-explanatory title, the competition involves animators and filmmakers from around the world putting together short films from start to finish in the first 21 days of August.

All established teams that submit films per the requirements are guaranteed screening at the project’s Film Festival, and the films that excel in the competition are rewarded with prizes, commercial DVD releases and online exposure.

Two years ago, Project Twenty1 drew in the interest of West Chester student, Chris Pierdomenico.

An active filmmaker and producer, Pierdomenico possesses a Youtube account full of his creations, which are mostly short films riddled with humor. Pierdomeninco recognized the intensity of the competition and saw the program as a way to break out of the comedic mold that precedes him.

“All I knew going in was that I wanted to do something epic and dramatic,” he said.

Each year, the competition coordinators choose a “secret element,” which must somehow be incorporated into every team’s production. This year, the secret element was “key,” with no specification given regarding the meaning or sense of the word.

Pierdomenico entered with his crew as Team Philagape, after his company, Philagape Productions. Unlike other productions in his past, Pierdomenico possessed a full camera crew and art department.

“My strength is in directing and producing,” he said.

“Because we had an extremely gifted Director of Photography and camera/lighting/sound crew, my involvement with the technical aspect was very minimal, allowing me to be a stronger director.”

The competition guarantees exposure among other film festivals for all entries, but only one team has the chance to be the grand prize-winning group. This year the recipient of the “Best Film” award will win a prize package valued at over $1,000. Included in the package are filming equipment, digital distribution of the film by New World Digital Entertainment (which distributes to sources like iTunes and Amazon.com) and a free voucher to enter the 2010 competition.

Unfortunately, the final submission for Team Philagape’s short film was late by two minutes. Because of this deadline infraction, their entry is only eligible for the Best Marketing and Audience’s Choice awards.

“Project Twenty1 will also still screen the film and promote us and distribute to other film festivals,” says Pierdomenico.

“Everybody working on the team also has an opportunity to get an IMDB credit.”

Despite the fact that his film won’t be judged for the grand prize, Pierdomenico is still enthused and grateful for this experience.

“Directing is exhilarating for me. I love this art form, and just the opportunity to make something and have people go see it is all I need.”

The Project Twenty1 Film Festival will take place Oct. 1-4 at the International House’s Ibrahim Theater in Philadelphia.

During the festival, all of the film submissions will be shown in a theatrical setting for judging. For a behind the scenes look at the planning and production that Team Philagape put into the competition, visit www.youtube.com/ebchrispy.
